Steve Jobs, founder of Apple, highlights in this brilliant speech how marketing is all about 'values', in a world where 'values' are 'valued'. Steve Jobs also highlights how Apple's core values are based on the belief that people with passion can change the world for the better and we believe this too ... and if anyone is any doubt about these ideals, just look at Apple today, the most valuable (and highly respected) company in the World!
A brilliant interview with Simon Sinek, a man who inspires me greatly, talking about how (and why) the world is shifting to a new paradigm, where we measure and reward 'behaviours', not 'results', 'outputs' or 'performance'.

We are moving to a world where 'values' are 'valued' ... 'economics' is having a complete re-think and beginning to move away from a system where the only measure of 'value' is money ... a movement which aligns very well with the Good Turns Foundation and its measurement of 'Good' (e.g. Good Points®, Health Points®, Community Points®, Environment Points®).
There's an age old saying that "employees are a companies most valuable asset" ... however for many these words are seen as sound-bites when the world around them seems to scream quite the opposite. However, in this TED talk, Warren Valdmanis describes how investors are now starting to look at companies in very different ways ... and through the creation of 'Good Jobs' ...

A great animated video from Jess Jenkins ... using Creativity to improve Mental Well-being. "Five ways to be Mentally Fit", created for "Steve", a documentary to help men battle depression, in a world where men account for 80% of suicides.

In this world, all human beings are born equal and in life the only real value is time ... within this time what truly matters is also the "Size of one's Heart" and "Strength of one's Character", which is why the Good Turns Foundation measures the size of the Heart [Good Points®] alongside the strength of Character [Character Points®]. In this lighthearted film from back in 1964 this simple and serious point was made.
Simon Sinek, a truly great leader and someone who certainly inspires me, talking about vision, meaning and purpose ... definitely worth listening to and for me 'vision' is to 'see' a desired future, 'mission' is a statement of intent of what we plan to do to bring this 'vision' to life, and purpose is our 'raison d'étre' ... our 'reason for being' that motivates us and connects to our hearts and minds (i.e. 'our true self', or as Simon calls it, 'our why') ...
"... and it's usually ourselves that are unwilling to listen to it ... what did you love when you were younger? ... when did you light up? ... who are your role models and inspirations? ... you have to be willing to go down the path exploring it ... we put so many blocks on ourselves ... and money is the most trapping thing ... if you had all the money in the world how would you spend your day tomorrow? What would truly light you up? ..."
We have all been told that the mind is very complex and it isn't - because the way you feel about everything is down to only two things ... the pictures we make in our head and the words we tell ourselves. And the important thing about the mind is that it does what you think you want! Marisa Peer, renowned therapist, explains the power of pictures and storytelling ... and the fact the most important story is the story we tell ourselves every single day!
Emily Esfahani Smith went to graduate school for Positive Psychology to learn what truly makes people happy ... and the data showed chasing happiness can make people unhappy ... more people feel hopeless, depressed and alone ... the predictor of despair is a lack of having meaning in life ... meaning that comes from belonging to, and serving, something beyond yourself and from developing the best within you ... which fully aligns with ancient philosophy too ...
Our mind either works for us or against us ... forming negative downward spirals ... or virtuous positive spirals depending on the direction we choose to take ...the world is all about stories and the most important story of all is the story we tell ourselves every single day ... by freeing our mind and by changing this story we can help our mind change it's direction of travel ... let the mind become free, free to see the world in a different way, and free to create a better life ...
As 'humans' we can often learn a great deal about 'humanity' from other social animals (e.g. dogs). In my humble opinion this video provokes many questions ... and offers many valuable insights too. For instance who shut the door? Is anyone still trying to stop the door from opening? ... and ... how patient those so desiring a better future wait, how it takes only one to be curious, persistent and creative, how others will take the lead once given the opportunity, who enters last ... much to learn here ... about the future and 'humanity'
Humanity ... humans displaying the 'art of being human', by demonstrating our natural creativity and our desire to help others ... which particularly stands out when we see others clearly in distress (e.g. in this case when a young boy has been separated from his father). I love this video and it follows on from my last video post showing how animals can often show us the way too ... and I'm still singing the song! ... Eduardo, come and find Juan Cruz' ...
Queen Elizabeth II redefined the meaning of duty and at the same time demonstrated to entire world the value and importance of living a life of service ... we thank Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II from the bottom of our hearts ... and in my humble opinion it's now our collective responsibility to ensure the beacon of light/hope Queen Elizabeth II so majestically provided continues to shine brightly in Her Majesty's memory, rest in peace.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II demonstrated to the world the importance of Virtue ... and as former chaplain to the Queen Gavin Ashenden highlights here ... "one of the most striking things about Queen Elizabeth II was the way in which her virtues seemed to deepen” ... we thank Her Majesty from the bottom of our hearts and continuing this dedication to Virtue is in my humble opinion now our collective responsibility, to ensure Her Majesty's beacon of light/hope continues to shine brightly in Her Majesty's honor ... more can be found in news article [GTF20092022_01]
The world of recruitment is changing radically - and in many different ways ... for instance purely academic / intellectual skills (and grades) are taking more of a back seat as forward-looking enterprises increasingly prioritise recruitment based on character, values, passion and purpose ... because any additional academic skills can easily be trained however attitude, character and passion cannot ... which is common sense when one takes the time to step back and think about it
Richard Osman, in a recent interview with Steven Bartlett, was asked about 'being creative' and 'becoming more creative', and Richard's answer really chimed with me ... as his answer aligns well with how I experience creativity too ... unleashing untapped talent and creativity is something the Good Turns Foundation is passionate about, and we plan to partner with forward-looking individuals / enterprises in order to help in this goal ... if this is your passion too then let's talk!
If anyone is in any doubt as to why we are doing what we are doing, and the importance of what we are doing to help young people, then they should watch this most profound speech given by Izzy Garbutt [MYP, Wigan and Leigh] in the Youth Parliament in Nov. 2022 ... young people are making their voice heard, loudly and clearly, adding weight as to why Jewel of a School is being developed, and bringing well-being, values, character, and skills for life centre stage ...
Steven Barlett reflecting on how Health should always be Priority number One! ... as it provides the very foundation that everything else relies upon ... and it's not just your physical health, it's your mental health and nutritional health too ... all of which are intricately interconnected ... which is why the Good Turns Foundation's Good Points System™ covers these areas too ... with Health Points™, Exercise Points™, Sports Points™, Wellbeing Points™ and Nutrition Points™ for instance
Humans are born curious, playful and creative, and untapped talent and creativity needs to be unleashed ... which is why Jewel of a School® will also be helping to create a world that's Creative Inside® ... for instance with the introduction of The Creative Crew®, where young people's creativity is nurtured, students earn Creative Points® and, through partnerships, become the entrepreneurs of the future, harnessing innovation and pushing the boundaries of what is possible .... more can be found in news article [GTF04012022_01]
A brilliant TED talk by Tim Harford exploring creativity and the 'art' of 'slow motion multi-tasking', which completely chimes with me and how my mind works. In the talk Harford relates back to the life of Albert Einstein and Charles Darwin ... and the power and importance of switching between different areas of interest ... and, for me, this is what helps us "to 'see' what everyone else sees ... and to 'think' (and 'do') what no-one has ever thought (or done)" ...
"I know it’s important for adults to use their devices sometimes, but kids are hardwired to seek out meaningful connections, not receiving them causes confusion and stress ... how hard it would be for a child to feel calm ... to feel safe ... to learn to trust anyone ... and the lifelong impact that would have ... the positive relationships with the grown-ups in our lives gives kids the confidence we need to try new things, to explore and be a kid" ... a brilliant TED talk by Molly Wright (Age 7)
A powerful video (and poem by Sarah Dillon) about some of the feelings / circumstances behind why young people are rude, including ... it provides an outlet for all the pent up emotions inside ... because it gives me attention even if it's negative attention ... because I'm tired and hungry and just want a cuddle ... because it's the label I've been given by everyone else so I might as well live up to it ... because I need to push you away before you reject me ... because I'm scared ...
A profound and insightful talk by Robert Wallinger, exposing what really makes people happy and healthy, based on an 85 year Havard study of people as they progress through life. When young, we set out in life thinking it involves becoming rich and famous, when we look back we find it's not these things at all, it's all about being with people we care about and doing things we care about ... more information can be found in news article [GTF07022023_01]
An insightful interview with Prof. Dacher Keltner talking about the profound impact of finding Awe. Finding compassion, connectedness, purpose, and meaning from gratitude and awe and a world far bigger than ourselves. Awe is more that gratitude and connects us to others and the world, and adds 10 years to our lives too ... and we can find it every day, through our breathing, by showing empathy/kindness, gratitude for the world around us, and by voicing gratitude ...
A truly inspirational speech by Robert Kennedy, asking the question whether we are measuring / valuing the right things ... is GDP a good measure of success? does it show how wellbeing and prosperity are improving in our society? Robert Kennedy thought not and, in this landmark speech, explains 'why GDP measures everything except that which is worthwhile' ... and this also applies at an individual level, which is why the Good Turns Foundation is doing what it's doing ...
A truly inpirational and landmark speech given by Robert Kennedy, highlighting how "everyone seeks as we do ... nothing but the chance to live out their lives in purpose and in happiness, 'winning' what satisfaction and fulfillment they can ... surely this bond of common faith, this bond of common goal, can begin to teach us something, surely we can learn, at least to look at those around us as fellow men" ... the Good Turns Foundation fully agrees ... and is playing its part ...
Bhutan has for some time been recognised as an amazing place - and one reason for this is that Bhutan's visionary King Jigme Singye Wangchuck saw the flawed wisdom associated with a world focused on growth of Gross National Product (GDP) and sought to fix this ... and the result? ... a profoundly different and refreshing system of governance & 'economics' not focused on GDP, and instead focused on 'Gross National Happiness' (GNH), which for many years has successfully driven 'development with values' (purposeful development) and constitutionally guided all policy & investment decisions ... and created one of the happiest place on the planet ...
The world is changing rapidly and as we stand right now leading neuroscientists, environmental scientists and ecologists believe we are rapidly heading along an unsustainable path … where humanity is systematically destroying itself, the natural world and the planet itself. To survive and thrive in the future humankind will need to think very differently and the world of economics is starting to wake up to this ... and exploring more holistic, practical, positive and sustainable paths, where value and values are valued, instead of limitless 'growth' and growth from failure ...
A brilliant interview with Lauren Wasser, by Steven Bartlett (Diary of a CEO). This is so true and people, sometimes out of self interest, try to stop you by saying 'no'. However if you are clear in purpose, and it's your 'reason for being' (ie passion), stay the course, it's not wrong what you are doing, it was just the 'wrong door'! Try not to be frustrated - keep going as it is these encounters that steer you to the 'right door', make you create/innovate even more, and make you stronger!
In this brilliant interview, Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, discusses the inherent creativity of humankind, and how innovations such as the bicycle allowed us to create the most efficient form of transport on the planet ... all those years ago he also predicted (and drove) the rapid growth in techology we see today (and we now have AI), and he analogised this with the creation of the bicycle, freeing humankind from the mundane & releasing more time to be human and creative - and humankind now needs to ensure it uses it for this purpose ... to help humanity thrive ...
A very insightful discussion (with Jack Ma) pointing to future of education and the world of work as we move forward into an increasingly digital world. It points to the importance of values and to the foundational ('soft') skills needed in the future, ones that 'knowledgeable' computers cannot easily replicate, including communication, creativity, teamwork, lateral thinking, problem solving, 'wisdom' and caring, which are even more relevant now, in a world already being disrupted by AI.
'Students are going to be using ChatGPT and other forms of AI to cheat. They’re not going to learn and it’s going to completely undermine education as we know it' … alternatively, and with the right guardrails / strategies, are we about to see AI help to create one of the biggest (and positive) transformational changes education has ever seen ... e.g. where every student on the planet has an artificially intelligent / amazing personal tutor and every teacher on the planet has an amazing, artificially intelligent teaching assistant ... a brilliant TED talk by Sal Khan
The world of enterprise / education are changing as we speak ... and pointing the way to a better future ... a far more collaborative and purpose-driven future. This brilliant TED talk by Debbi Haski-Leventhal highlights the shift towards purpose-driven universities for instance, whilst news article GTF16062023_01 points the way forward with regard to purpose-driven enterprise. We see this too and our work very much aligns with / supports this shift.
The future of education and the world of work will look very different in the future, and both are already starting to experience this (eg with the arrival of AI). Values and foundational ('soft') skills will become increasingly key, and forward-looking schools are already heading in this direction. This great video highlights how things can be very different, and how much more will be possible in the future ... to help young people, communities and the planet to flourish / thrive.
This brilliant TED talk by Rita Pierson is a very powerful one ... with numerous profound messages contained within it. Just one of the messages is every child needs a champion, someone who's got their back, will sit with them in the cold, and will fight their corner. They ask, they listen, they help, they support. They have difficult conversations and also ask 'Are you okay? I mean are you okay? I'm worried about you' ... i.e. someone who truly cares ...
Singapore is re-thinking the purpose of education - where education is not about competition, and is all about preparing and empowering students to become compassionate, innovative and socially responsible global citizens ... with less focus on exams and more on creating space for curiosity, creativity, teamwork and leadership and the development of social skills, as well as a love of learning ... life long learning.
Another brilliant video looking at what schooling could be and should be - looking at what schools are doing in one of the countries leading the world in education - Finland - with great insights into how curiosity, play, values, civics, personalised learning and development of human skills all take centre stage - and what do we call this? ... Purposeful Education™ ... giving all young people the opportunity to flourish & thrive, to find their true self, to love learning, and to be happy.
The Japanese education system believes that requiring students to clean up after themselves teaches them teamwork, respect and to help each other. Besides, spending their own time and effort sweeping, mopping, and wiping makes pupils respect their own work and the work of others. The educational philosophy in Japan goes beyond academic excellence and places a significant emphasis on values/character development, moral education ("dÅtoku"), relationships, culture and etiquette, collaboration, and collective responsibility ...
Bhutan has for some time been recognised as one of the happiest place on the planet and for good reason ... Bhutan classes Education as the highest priority of all, and the most noble of sectors, and they make sure they get it 100% right! It is not only about development of the mind & intellect, it's about the development of values, the heart and hand, and providing purposeful, worthwhile, meaningful education ... which aligns very well with what both Jewel of a School™ and Purposeful Education™ are doing, which can be seen in this brilliant interview with Former Education Minister of Bhutan, Thakur S. Powdyel ...
Critical Thinking is a 'critical' skill of the future, and our ability to 'think critically' is crucial to making the world a better place and to the future of humanity. Here a 'young' Elon Musk provides a few tips in how to do this, by 'reasoning from first principles' rather than 'reasoning by analogy'. Steven Bartlett highlights here how this changed his life (and being scientifically trained this is how my mind works too) and the future will depend on us training more people how to do this ...
Forward-looking individuals/organisations are referring to 'Creativity' as the new 'Superpower' ... and 'reasoning from first principles' is a great way to be creative in the truest sense of the word (compared with 'reasoning by analogy' which generates copying/imitation). In his legendary TED talk Sir Ken Robinson calls Creativity "the process of having original ideas that have value" and the art to discovering original ideas is "the ability to see what everyone else can see and to think what no-one else has ever thought" - which is why 'reasoning from first principles' is so powerful
I love this video and a great message ... life's all about knowing your value and knowing what you care about - your values, passion(s) and purpose ... and once you've found these stay strong, take your time and keep moving forward. It's also worth remembering not to be sad if you are steered away as this will always happen whoever you are and whatever you are doing ... instead remind yourself it's not what you're doing, it's just the world's way of steering you from the 'wrong place' to the 'right place' and making you more creative, innovative & stronger ...
A brilliant interview with Daniel Priestley, highlighting just a few of the changes we're likely to see in the future and some we are already seeing today. The world of enterprise is rapidly changing, and will be changing at an ever faster pace. e.g. AI is already disrupting the world, 'influencing' is shifting to meaningfully (and ethically) investing Ambassadors (e.g. Purposeful Ambassadors™), and education is starting to dramatically change too (Purposeful Education™) ...
A brilliant/insightful interview with Sam Harris talking about AI & the distruptive ways 'bad actors' are already driving misinformation, disinformation & deepfakes (action), and it's getting extremely difficult to know what's real/true. General AI, and Narrow AI, are already rapidly accelerating this and both robust guard rails & ethics will be needed if humanity is to survive/thrive. Such insights significantly worry Steven Barlett (DOAC) & Elon Musk about the future too. What can to done? A number of good ideas are discussed here that we also see/support and we have more ideas too ...
If this hasn't happened already, I'm sure AI will soon learn how students individually write ... by submitting past work/assignments. It will then write assignments much closer to how the student would write them, in their style, with their mistakes & with all their individual quirks/nuances ... ie perfectly imperfect! ... In my humble opinion the abilities/capabilities of AI will grow at an ever increasing pace, as will the very many opportunities and challenges ...
Human flourishing and psychological wellbeing are associated with having a sense of purpose, and doing good for others, society and the planet. Whether you see it as the art of 'being', karma, or 'the law of reciprocity', the concept is central to almost all cultural, philosophical and spiritual teachings (e.g. Aristotle) ... "Acts of kindness and altruism can create a ripple effect, inspiring others to do good as well, and contribute to a more compassionate and harmonious society" ...
Another insightul TED talk exploring a few trends (and five tips) in the world of recruitment and retention. They include focusing on the actual skills that a job needs, the coffee interview, the increasingly use of micro-internships & casting the 'net' wider to find a much wider/diverse set of talent/ideas - as we are not going to achieve breakthrough levels of change by doing what we've always done & is in part why the Good Turns Foundation/Purposeful Education have been set up
The best possible hire to make may often not be the one with the highest academic grades, and for a number of reasons e.g. demonstratable values, attitudes, and 'human skills' are increasingly more important cf purely academic skills, e.g. if an individual struggles to communicate or work effecively in a team then they are unlikely to be able to contribute to the overall effectiveness of an organisation. This video points out that values, a sense of purpose, tenacity, resourcefulness, and resilience are all crucial ... which are all integral to what we are doing too ...
Is humankind being turned into a scarecrow and/or a robot driven by social media? Hopefully the answer is neither ... and we will once again see humanity flourish. Alarm bells are currently being sounded by leading psychologists, neuroscientists & philosophers, and humanity ignores these at its peril. Here's one recent video highlighting a few of the challenges, and there are many more ... and we need to change course rapidly if we are 'to stop humankind destroying humanity' ...
Humankind is born a unique social animal with a natural instinct to collaborate and support each another, with its unique capability to co-operate, create, and innovate, using all of the conscious mind humankind has been gifted (cf dolphins). Yet we are increasingly/destructively being driven to compete/fight (cf sharks) and in doing so humankind is unrealizingly/systematically destroying itself ... neuroscientists/psychologists are all sounding the alarm and are saying humanity needs to change course quickly if it is to survive ... will humankind listen? ... co-operate and innovate?
The world for many years understood the value of wisdom. History, philosophy, scriptures, culture and stories all highlight how wisdom often arises out of solitude, quiet time/space for reflection, introversion & introspection (e.g. books/walks in nature). Today we seem to be increasingly losing this ideal, and humanity will need all its intuition, reason, imagination & creativity if it is not only survive but thrive/flourish. To do this it will need to listen carefully to the character/wisdom of the learned (introverts), and make sure their voices are not drowned out by personality (extroverts)
The frontier of education is moving rapidly and the environment around education is changing radically (e.g. with the arrival of AI) ... Education is moving progressively beyond retention of information (and high-stake tests), with an ever increasing focus on values, skills, knowledge, experiential learning and creativity ... education establishments are increasingly embedding a unique clarity of purpose too, to provide highly engaging & meaningful Purposeful Education™
The word "sustainability" gets thrown around a lot these days. But what does it actually mean for humanity to be sustainable? Environmental data scientist Hannah Ritchie digs into the numbers behind human progress across centuries, unpacking why the conventional understanding of sustainability is misleading and showing how we can be the first generation of humans to actually achieve it.
A brilliant interview with Airbnb co-founder Brian Chesky highlighting how the future will be about bringing people together (beyond connecting people with hosts, destinations & rooms). We need to fix a loneliness crisis (including for our young people) and rediscover our shared humanity. If you think you don't fit in, or if think you're not good enough, think again, as you are exactly the kind of person who will change the world for the better ... if you use your intuition & creativity ...
Wise words here from Peter Jones that apply to all business/organisations and that equally apply to ones whole life journey ... "dream big ... and if it's not big, grab a coffee, reflect more & think bigger" ... what's your vision, mission & purpose ... the Good Turns Foundation has now created Purposeful Education™, Finding You™, Purposeful Ambassador™ and Purposeful Organisations™ in order to partner with like-minded groups and help individuals & organisations to find theirs ...
With the very many crises now faced, an inspired vision and bold action will be required to turn things around. These will need strong foundations ... of trust, values/virtue, purpose and service. Solutions exist however time is not on our side. We will need Purposeful Government™, a trusted Purpose Driven Government™ focused on creating a Purposeful Britain™ ... and the question is ... who has the firepower and capabilities to deliver it?
A great interview with Lord Jim Knight, looking forward & highlighting how education will need a new (and clear) sense of purpose in the future - offering young people hope & opportunity ... by moving beyond the attainment of knowledge and towards helping all young people to thrive in life (not just in exams). Caring about mental health, caring for others and the natural world will be key too ... helping us to be better humans and to 'compete with' / 'compliment' machines (eg A.I.)
Post AGI Education - a quick look ahead ... lots and lots of 1:1 expert 'tutors', novel field trips and experiences, lots of hands-on time, projects, playing & socialising, individualised learning, building human skills, neuro-cognitive development, emotional & social intelligence, critical thinking, life skills, ethics & morality, and civic education ... all creating a socially healthy environment/world & focused on helping students reaching their highest personal potential.
Will Artificial Intelligence in Education reduce humanity or enhance humanity? ... This great video shows how it's the latter, and is already happening! AI supported/adaptive learning allows twice the core knowledge normally learnt in a day to be learnt in 2 hours, leaving the rest of the school day for projects, play, personal passions and interests, human skills, life skills and developing emotional & social intelligence (just to name a few) - and what we call Purposeful Education™ ...
Karren Brady, from BBC's Apprentice, talks about the importance of having honest conversations, and organisations starting to answer important questions, 'what do we stand for', 'what are our values', 'what's our purpose', 'what's our reason for being', 'why is the world a better place for our organisation being in it'? Simple and important questions people are increasingly asking, and all organisations need to ask, reflect/act upon, and honestly communicate, to all stakeholders ...
What's your vision? ... What's your purpose? ... without vision and purpose you just 'drift around'. Arnold Swarzenegger referring to the importance of having a vision, and a clarity of purpose. The majority of people do not know where they are going. When you have vision and purpose you get a smile on your face as you start to turn your vision into reality ... you've got to have a purpose ... "No matter what you do in life you've got to have a Purpose" ...
Scott Galloway certainly thinks so and explains why in this brilliant TED talk. So is this a deliberate act? Is this 'purposeful' (as Scott suggests)? What's the difference? It may be deliberate, however it's certainly not 'purposeful'! Being 'purposeful' is not just about being deliberate/strong willed, it also involves good intent and meaningful action (to address societal and planetary problems) - i.e. not avarice/self interest. Purposeful has far more meaning than being deliberate, it's about being deliberate with strong ethics/values and good intentions (for society, planet & future generations).
This week the people of the UK voted for 'change' - change to a Government in service of its people. Country-first, party-second. The politics of self-interest banished, and a new refreshing type of non-partisan 'politics' promised, focused on the national interest, which takes us back to Aristotle's original definition of 'politics'. The coming together of citizens for the 'common good'. One small and important step towards creating a better Britain and a Purposeful Britain.
Around the world there's a buzz in the air, the direction of travel is rapidly changing, and a more Purposeful World is starting to appear ... focused on Purpose, on becoming Purposeful, and changing our world for the better (creating a Purposeful World). Purpose driven organisations acting as a force for good are actively/strategically moving away from a simple model of 'do no harm' to one with 'purpose', impact, and meaningful goals of 'doing good' and solving societal problems (eg. people & planet). Early adopters/investors have already moved & more are following ...
Concern about the future (e.g. the wellbeing of humanity and the sustainability of the planet) are directly driving changes to Corporate Governance - and it's now very clear that the future will be a PURPOSEFUL one ... e.g. the National Association of Corporate Directors (USA) has now made 'Purpose' priority one in corporate governance, the British Academy has published 'Principles for Purposeful Business', and the British Standards Institution (BSI) has published early guidance for Purpose-Driven Organizations (PAS 808) - actions charting the movement to a Purposeful World.
